Brief summary: Krishna had everything planned out for her arrival which suggests that he is not spontaneous. The atmosphere at the train station seemed to be chaotic which contrasts with his routine character. The first impression that is created of Susila when she first arrived was that she is a very calm and compose person which contrasts with Krishna as he is less serene than she is. He gets so stressed out and had so much fear and worry about the safety of his child and whether they will be able to disembark in time or not. This seems fairly ridiculous as he can not quite deal with the chaotic situation. It shows that they had come from a different world and had been raised differently. Krishna life is more conforming, strict, routine and materialistic while her life is more spontaneous, creative and simplistic. Role of Novel:
In times of her presence , Susila acts as one of the teachers who shows Krishna to see the other side of life, and also develop his own way of living. She drags him out if his ordinary routine ways from the hostel to see what is like to do something different. She influenced Krishna with the Indian culture and taught him to break his routine. Susila teaches him the value of love and how to love others as well as himself. She also taught him to believe in spirituality which is something that cannot be explained nor has rules.
Quotations Analysis
"I saw her sitting serenely in her seat with the baby lying on her lap." pg. 28
This gives the image that Susila has a calm and controlled personality, which is the opposite of Krishna's. She also has protection over Leela, because the is the mother.
"She merely smiled and said: 'I will carry the baby down.'" pg. 28
Here Susila is shown as being in control because of the use of "I", a modal verb, which shows that she is the only person who looks after Leela.
"She picked up the child and unconcernedly moved on." pg. 28
Susila is demonstrating peacefulness and how she doesn't worry about small details. This is the opposite to Krishna's character, where he worries about everything going wrong and how they are going to get off the train when it arrives.
"You don't know how to carry a baby yet. You will sprain her." pg.29
Susila cares about Leela and she has realised that Krishna doesn't know how to care for her yet. She is not trusting of even her husband, which shows that she has been apart from her husband for a long time.
