Brief Summary
Susila played a significant role of being Krishna’s teacher. She passively taught him about spontaneity and spirituality but most importantly, she gave him love. After the strange typhoid death of Susila, Krishna became emotionally crushed. This caused a major change to Krishna’s life because Susila was his everything but Krishna managed to move on without Susila afterwards.

From chapter 4:
· (p.92) “The days had acquired a peculiar blankness and emptiness.” This quotation reinforces Krishna’s grief after the tragic loss of Susila, which is further emphasized by the lack of emotions in his expression. If Narayan were to ‘exaggerate’ Krishna’s emotions (e.g. “the sense of anguish was unbearable”) it would feel too unreal. Instead, Narayan depicts the pure reality of a mournful man, which highlights one of the main themes of the novel – to create this ‘realistic balance’.
(p.95) “At first I put it down to a general disclination for change.”
