Unanswered Questions and Queries throughout the Book…
These bullet points are simply suggestions and can differ on people’s opinion and up for alternation or additions…
· Krishna never finds Susila’s 14 letters to him
In chapter 5 the second session when Krishna is able to communicate to Susila through the medium the 14 letters are mentioned along with the sandalwood casket, however Krishna does not find it. Then in chapter 7 when the grandmother visits she brings with her the sandalwood casket, nevertheless the letters were not to be found.
· Krishna’s weird ways around his wife
The way Krishna says and acts around his wife is strange throughout the book. It is evident that he loves her very much but at the same time he objectifies and treats Susila strangely…
e.g. “I wanted to please her…” – Chapter 3
“Like a Childs taste…her eyes sparkled like a child” - Chapter 3
· Headmaster never gives Leela the cat
In chapter 6 the headmaster promises to give Leela a cat and that is why Krishna ends up going to the headmaster’s house which shows the reader the situation and character of the headmaster in the book. Perhaps the cat was just put in the book to keep the story linked.
· Where does the headmaster receive the income for school and his “family” when he doesn’t make any money (Also manage to pay Krishna 25 rupees monthly)
· The way parent/child talk to each other (Krishna and Leela)
The way the two characters talk to each other is polite, maybe because she grew up that way and is more mature than others… however both characters are very demanding, patronizing each other.
Leela;
“Let us go”, “Why do you follow me father”
Krishna;
“Call her, let me see”
· Krishna is “complete” but is he really?
The book finishes when Krishna has found peace in him and he is able to communicate to Susila by himself; and in short term he probably is “complete” but in the long term will he be? Leela’s future may be set, but eventually Krishna may not be satisfied with what he has and fall to his usual depressed self. Life is probably not that simple and one way or the other his “complete” new way may come to a fatal end.
· Krishna is not living a complete healthy life
Throughout the book Krishna does not really lead a very healthy life, the only time he probably is, is when Susila and Leela first come into his life and they are happy in chapter 3 and beginning of chapter 4. Krishna at the beginning is living by himself and that is probably not healthy physically and hygienically. Then by the end of the book Krishna is not healthy mentally, because from the outside view talking to a dead wife isn’t exactly the healthiest lifestyle…
· Krishna is a religious name but Susila isn’t
