Nature: Nature is constantly made reference to throughout the novel, as it is subject that has so many elements and aspects within it that make it so appropriate for this story. Particularly as Krishna, the protagonist considers himself to be a poet. A poet can always write about nature. Nature is a reiterated theme throughout the novel; we see this through the hell of the hostel where Krishna lived and similarly the smutty and squalid street that the headmaster and his family live on.
It seems, throughout the story that being close to nature for a number of characters can be both calming and rejuvenating. All the way through the book it seems that Krishna’s ultimate goal is to find a place that he belongs, he seeks harmony and peace. At first Krishna looks to nature to steer him towards change but by the end of the book he comes to believe that in order to find harmony and peace you must find a place amongst people that make you happy with who you are and what you do. Thus, he leaves his job at the college to work with the headmaster and young children.
