Gender Roles
In the English teacher, gender roles are clearly portrayed with women being the weaker sex. The female characters present in the story are more than often only confined to housework and economics of the home while men, being the stronger sex as portrayed in the story continuously engage in more serious matters and go on to accomplish serious enterprises.
Throughout the story, Krishna and Susila often come to engage in arguments, but strangely enough Susila would eventually come out with a rational explanation making Krishna’s panic unreasonable in comparison with Susila’s calmness after each incident. But later on when Krishna realises that Susila often has a good reason on her opinions, she finally gets the acceptance and respect from Krishna. So evidently, Narayan finally shows that the female duty of being housewife is actually a hard found skill.
